It has always amazed us that many anglers will “test the waters” of other lodges to find the perfect lodge. 2020 should even be better.Ĭombine this with the finest dining and personalized service of any lodge in Alaska and you will understand why our return rate is so high and will continue in 2020. Our private and exclusive land lease at the outlet of Kukaklek Lake provided an almost identical experience as at Royal Wolf Lodge except the rainbows at Big Ku reached a larger size, mostly 16” to 30” class. If large numbers of rainbow are on your priority list we are extremely confident June of 2020 will be a repeat of 2019. A day of releasing fifty to one hundred fish in the 12” to 28” class is the highlight of anyone’s trip. To some it was “the best day of fishing of their life”, to others the challenge was to hook the big ones. It is strange to have to state that the rainbow fishing was ridiculous, or “stupid” since every cast was a hookup and if lost another one grabbed it before you retrieved the line. There were over a thousand rainbows between the mouth of our home river, the Nonvianuk, and our property line a mile downstream. This allows trout to better survive long winter days in healthier condition.įlying over the river at the lodge the day before we opened in 2019 was a jaw dropping sight. The temperatures are warmer earlier and remain warm longer. If our current mild weather patterns are an indication of what to expect in 2020, plan to experience some of the best fishing ever possible in the last fifty years! Why? This is simply because the environment has changed drastically in favor of our rainbows. The temperature, rain, wind, sun, water levels, salmon runs, hatches and health of the rainbows, regardless of these conditions we will always find you plenty of rainbows. We continue to state there is no such thing as “the best week to fish” every week has its special moments that separate it from all the others. We feel very honored by the high praise everyone gave on their visit to Royal Wolf Lodge in 2019. In spite of all these conditions the comments from new and returning guests were impressive: “The best rainbow fishing ever!” or “The best week of fishing I have ever experienced over my many years of visiting Royal Wolf Lodge.” We had days with huge numbers and days with football size torpedoes. The most concerning were the extremely low water levels. The weather, except for a few weeks, was very mild, calm and hot. Salmon runs were the highest ever counted. At Royal Wolf Lodge in Katmai National Park, this was the hottest and most unusual weather ever recorded, and the rainbow fishing was still amazing.
